The Killaloe Whiskey Company was founded by four friends on the shores of Lough Derg in Killaloe. In 2019 they begain exploring and experimenting with wine finished whiskeys. In March 2024 they released their first products, the Tobar series (Irish for Well) - Tobar Dorcha (Dark), Tobar Geal (Bright) and Tobar Réaltach (Star Lit). Just at the time of our tasting, a second batch of Tobar Dorcha had been just bottled. The company are progressing to becoming fully fledged whiskey bonders in 2026 with their own bonded warehouse and new visitor centre.
TD2401 is batch number one of Tobar Dorcha and was released in March 2024. It is a blended malt, with malt from two distilleries. A combination of malts from ex-bourbon, ex-calvado and ex-rioja casks. TD2501, batch number two, is another blended malt with similar components to batch one. This time, an 18 month marrying/finishing was imparted with a Chardonnay cask.
TD2401 (batch#1) was a limited run of just 350 indvidually numbered bottles; TD2501 (batch#2) was a run of just 225 individually numbered bottles. Both were bottled at 46% ABV with no added colouring and are non-chill filtered.
